on British Standards. Click to learn more. This British Standard, a part of the BS 812 series, describes a method for the determination of the aggregate crushing value (ACV) which gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under a gradually applied compressive load.
Aggregate crushing value is a numerical index of the strength of the aggregate and it is used in construction of roads and pavements. Crushing value of aggregates indicates its strength. Lower crushing value is recommended for roads and pavements as it indicates a lower crushed fraction under load and would give a longer service life and a more economical performance.
It is recommended that the crushing value of aggregate should be less than 30%. If it is more than 30 % then 10% finer aggregate is suggested to use. The aggregate whose crushing value is less than 30% can be used for cement concrete road. The aggregate whose crushing value is less than 40% can be used for wearing surface.
The aggregate crushing value is defined as a ratio of to the total weight of the sample expressed as a percentage.

Procedure to determine Aggregate Crushing Value i) The aggregates passing through 12.5mm and retained on 10mm IS Sieve are oven-dried at a temperature of 100 to 110 o C for 3 to 4hrs.
The percentage mass of fines (passing a 2.80mm BS test sieve) formed in the test is known as the aggregate impact value AIV. higher values are given by weaker materials. For the majority of aggregates the impact value and the crushing value are similar, but brittle materials such as flints yield impact values which are about 5 units higher than their crushing values.
03-10-2019· “Aggregate crushing value is determined by taking a percentage of weight crushed aggregate sample passing through 2.36 mm IS Sieve divided by weight of aggregate sample taken for test” Aggregate crushing value formula is given below, Aggregate crushing value = (W3 / W) or W3 / (W2 W1) W1 = Empty weight of cylindrical Measure.

AGGREGATE CRUSHING VALUE 1.Objective The aggregate crushing value gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under a gradually applied compressive load. With aggregate of aggregate crushing value 30 or higher, the result may be anomalous, and in such cases the ten percent fines value should be determined instead.
